Nicholas Hoffman Bayard, age 82, of West Falmouth, passed away on May 6, 2016 after a courageous battle with ampullary cancer. Nick and his two sisters Lucy Bayard Wood and Nina Bayard Cornell were born in New Jersey to Isabel Hoffman and Louis Pintard Bayard. They then moved to Pittsburgh and later, Ligonier, PA. From 1938 to 1952, they summered in West Falmouth with their grandmother, Lucy Forbes Bayard, in her historic Cape cottage. Nick and his sisters enjoyed tennis, sail boat racing, swimming, fishing for swordfish and striped bass, and having a coterie of good friends. Nick attended St. George s School in Middletown, RI and then went on to graduate from Yale University in 1956.

On June 7, 1958, Nick married Olivia Maverick Graves in San Antonio, TX. Following their wedding, Nick served three years as an active duty officer in the US Air Force, including a tour on the Dew Line in Greenland. Nick then went on to work for the World Bank in Washington DC; he traveled to Europe, India, the Middle East and West Africa working on development loan programs. He continued his career in the financial industry as an investment banker in NYC while raising his three children on ten acres in Pennington, NJ. Nick created magnificent gardens on the property and loved to spend his weekends working outside.

When Nick decided to leave investment banking, he moved to Bath, ME where he ran a bed and breakfast called the Inn at Bath for almost 20 years. He loved hosting guests, making new friends, planting gardens, and enjoying time with his dog, Clouseau.

Over the years, when visiting his sister Lucy in West Falmouth, Nick became friends with Gina Elliot White and her husband Gerry, who sadly died in 2006. In 2010 Nick moved from Maine to partner with Gina in her home in West Falmouth. Bringing his love of gardening with him, he arrived with a station wagon full of rhododendrons, azaleas, and magnolias to embark on a new adventure of creating beautiful gardens for their mutual enjoyment.

Nicholas is survived by his partner of 6 years, Gina White, as well as two daughters, a son, and four grandchildren.  His daughter, Sarah Southam, and husband, Peter, have two children, Samantha and Max.  His daughter, Elizabeth Bayard, has two children, Piper and Hudson McCarthy.  His son, Sam Bayard, is married to Nicole Brown. He is also survived by his younger sister, Nina B. Cornell and her husband Henry and two first cousins: Henry Guild and his wife Gale and Anne H. Smith and her husband Ernest. Nick s children also feel truly blessed for the love and kindness shown by Gina s family during his illness.  Gina s family members include: Tammy White and Tracy Maes, Robin and Ken Koenig, Tor White, Ross White and Sally and Fred DiUlus.

A private burial will be take place at the West Falmouth Friends Meeting House. For those who wish, a memorial gift can be made to the West Falmouth Library.
