Nathan Edward Bates, Jr. “Ed” 79 years old, died Tuesday January 28, 2020 peacefully at his home in Hanson, MA. Born in Weymouth, on May 8, 1940 to the late Genevieve and Nathan E. Bates, Sr.
Ed was the current president of the Pilgrim Winnebago RV Club of Massachusetts. He recently retired after 20 years from Team Ops/New England Patriots organization. He was a past Board member of Hanson Park and Fields, instrumental in the planning of Hanson’s Skate Board Park. Ed was a lifetime fisherman and clam digger, who was raised on King Cove Beach in Weymouth. As a Master Digger of soft shell clams, his crew worked with the Division of Marine Fisheries to locate contaminated fall out sites on local beaches, beginning the first action for the Boston Harbor Clean-up. He was a Concierge at 1600 Beacon Street, loving the people and children he watched grow throughout the many years. During the 1990’s Ed changed vocation to become a Greyhound Bus Driver exploring one of his favorite cities, New York.
Ed is survived by Sandra Bates, his wife of 42 years. Brother of William Bates of Quincy. Blended families of 7 children; Dawn Spartos of Brockton, Robert Perry of Brockton, Scott Perry of Wilmington, Nathan E. Bates, III of Whitman, Ronald Bates of Whitman, Bonnie Paola of Whitman, and Sallyann Dudley of Carver. Combined multiple grandchildren with exceptional close bonds with those that loved him. Ed was a cherished uncle of many nieces and nephews sharing life’s joys throughout the years.
Family and friends invited to attend visiting hours in the MacKinnon Funeral Home, 760 Washington St., Whitman on Sunday February 2 nd 2-5 pm. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday in the funeral home at 10 am. Burial to follow at Fern Hill Cemetery in Hanson.
