Mary Cristina (Chris) O’Brien, of Kingston, Mass., passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 4, 2021. Chris was born on December 24, 1930, in Galway County, Ireland, to Ellen and Tom Costello. She and her mother and nine siblings lived in the village of Castleblakeney, and emigrated to the United States after World War II. They settled in Dorchester, Mass., a suburb of Boston. In 1956 Chris married John (Jack) J. O’Brien, Jr. They were happily married for 58 years before John passed in 2014. They also raised two sons, Michael and John. Chris was an enormously devoted spouse and mother. Her family was the center of her life, and she showered John and her boys with constant love and support. She was also a lifelong New Englander who especially loved life on Cape Cod.
Chris is survived by her two sons and grandchildren Taylor, Lauren, Jack, and Chris O’Brien. Her surviving siblings include sisters Nancy Townley, Margaret Boyd, Sister Teresa Costello, Agnes Pouliot, and brother Tom Costello. Brothers Michael, Jimmy, Jack, and Eddie Costello preceded her in death. She is also survived by 31 nieces and nephews.
Chris will be laid to rest alongside her late husband at Massachusetts National Cemetery, adjacent to Otis Air Force Base, in Bourne, Mass.
