Marjorie Steele

May 4, 1956 — May 26, 2014

Marjorie Margie (Felton) Steele passed away on May 26, 2014 at the age of 58 at her home of 27 years in Cohasset, MA. Loved by her family and friends for her remarkably kind, generous spirit and genuine love for others, Margie s death is regarded as a blessing, releasing her from an 8-year struggle with Young Onset Alzheimer s Disease - one that we could not help and she could not win. Her lengthy battle with the disease was unique because she lived peacefully throughout, in the home she loved, with support from family, caregivers, and community - a network known as Team Margie .

Margie was born on May 4th, 1956 in Boston, - the middle child of George and Marjorie Felton, longtime residents of Hingham. She grew up in Hingham where she attended Derby Academy and went on to graduate from Chatham Hall, an all-girls boarding school in Chatham, VA. She attended Skidmore College, later transferred to Babson College, and graduated with a major in Marketing in 1978.

While at Babson she met the love of her life, Matt Steele. She married Matt in June 1981 at her family s home in Hingham, and so they began their 32-year journey together. Margie s family and extended family were the center of her universe. A devoted wife and mother, she created warm and welcoming homes in Cohasset and Sugar Hill, NH the latter a stone farmhouse in the White Mountains where she loved relaxing with family and friends and enjoying the beauty and serenity of the North Country. Known as Gigi to her sisters, nieces and nephews, she was happy and funny and full of life and laugher - a gift she freely shared with many. Beautiful, vibrant, and gracious Margie possessed a relaxed, friendly manner and a warm, compassionate smile that put others immediately at ease.

Helping other people came naturally to her, and she co-founded and operated the Cohasset Food Pantry for many years until the disease diminished her ability to work. In recognition of her selflessness and generosity Margie was recognized by her community as Cohasset s 2006 Citizen of the Year. , She was also Deaconess at the Second Congregational Church of Cohasset, Trustee at Derby Academy and served on the Board of the Cohasset Social Service League (as well as many other community services). She was a member of Cohasset Golf Club and Cohasset Yacht Club. Margie s beautiful life journey can be summed up in a Buddha saying: In the end, only three things matter: how much you loved, how gently you lived, and how gracefully you let go of things not meant for you.

Those left devastated by what the disease took away, besides her husband, include her three children, Caroline B. Steele (husband James Duggan), Samuel F. Steele (girlfriend Jenna Van Etten) , and Grace T. Steele (fianc é Brady Hoover), her two sisters Alice F. Horner (partner George Randall) of Hingham and Nancy F. Hughes (husband Clifford) of Manchester, MA, 13 nieces and nephews, her mother-in-law Jane Steele-Corriveau of Cohasset and her best friend Elizabeth Chapin of Geneva SUI, all who dearly loved her, and many precious friends who kept contact until the very end.

There are no calling hours.

A memorial service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday June 14th at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony Parish in Cohasset. A reception will follow at the Atlantica Restaurant , Border Street, Cohasset, from 12:00-2:00 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorial donations be made to the Margie Steele Foundation ( www.margiesteele.org ), which was established by her family in her honor to fund Young Onset Alzheimer s Disease research.
