Margaret Flanzbaum

January 1, 1916 — June 6, 2016

Margaret (Sposta) Flanzbaum of East Bridgewater passed away June 6, 2016 at Baypointe Nursing and Rehabilitation in Brockton at the age of 100.

She was the wife of the late Solomon Flanzbaum. Mother of Maureen Quinn of Brockton, Robert Flanzbaum of Roslindale and the late James (Jack )Flanzbaum of East Bridgewater, . She also leaves 2 grandchildren, Scott Lawrence of Stoughton and Kelly Quinn of Washington D.C.

Margaret was born in New York City on January 1, 1916. Growing up, Margaret loved school and was a straight A student but her education was cut short in 7th grade when she needed to go to work as a milliner to help the family. As an older adolescent, she was trained and worked in hospitals as a nursing assistant.

Her interests included History, poetry, roller skating, dance and especially singing. She began singing at an early age and as a young woman joined a chorus which performed at Carnegie Hall. Margaret made some attempts to break into the music business which left her feeling disillusioned with the industry. As a result, she continued to work in the nursing field.  In her early twenties she met her husband, Solomon Flanzbaum (from Boston) at Sloan Kettering Hospital in NYC. They eventually married and moved to Boston, MA. by her mid-twenties. During World War II, she worked as a welder (which she loved) until she became pregnant with her first child, James, followed by birth of Robert one year later. Her daughter, Maureen was born eight years later.

After her children began school, Margaret returned to work as a CNA in the nursing field while raising her family. In later years she worked as an O.R. set up assistant at the Shattuck Hospital. Margaret retired at age 65 from the Shattuck Hospital but it was short lived since she felt bored and unproductive. She returned to work as a CNA in a nursing homes. She also did some seasonal work for the Post Office at Christmas time.

Margaret was a loving mother and grandmother, always stressing the importance of family. And always the happiest when we could all be together. She was an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Rarely complained, always stayed positive.....always kept going. She was high spirited, caring, and compassionate. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a profound wisdom that stayed with her till the end.
