Margaret Cox

December 19, 1957 — July 14, 2014

Margaret "Margie" Elizabeth (White) Cox, of Weston, Mass. and Nantucket, died peacefully Monday, July 14, 2014 in her Weston home, surrounded by her loving children and devoted dogs. She was 56.

Margie was born in Rochester, N.Y. Dec. 19, 1957, the daughter of Dr. Robert R. White and Margaret “Peggy” (Howe) White. She graduated in 1976 from the Allendale Columbia School, where she was known for her keen sense of humor.

She attended Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine, earning her degree in sociology in 1980. While at Bowdoin, Margie was a member of the varsity women's tennis team and captain of the squash team, lettering in them in each of her four years.

Her mother Peggy, her mother's twin sister, Elizabeth “Betty” (Howe) Constable, and maternal grandmother, Margaret (Allen) Howe, had been pioneers in women's squash. The Howe Cup, which today is the largest women's squash event and annual team championship tournament in the United States, is named in their honor.

For many years, Margie participated in the Bowdoin Alumni Association of Boston, where she rekindled her friendship with her future husband, David Van Vleck Cox, also a 1980 graduate of Bowdoin College.

She married David at the Unitarian Universalist Church on Nantucket Sept. 22, 1990. Margie and David spent their entire married lives in Weston, Mass. at the house they dubbed "The Love Shack."

Margie was a life-long summer resident of Nantucket and a member of the Nantucket Yacht Club. She also enjoyed her daily walks with her dogs at Tupancy Links and the beach.

Margie was predeceased by her husband, David Van Vleck Cox. She is survived by their two children, Margaret "Margo" Howe Cox and Graham Van Vleck Cox, of Weston; her brothers, William Allen White and his wife, Roberta, of Nantucket, and Lindsay "Peter" White and his wife Susan, of Cambridge, Mass.; her father- and mother in-law David and Fredrika Cox, of Nantucket, Mass. and Amelia Island, Fla.; as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews; and her life-long friend Emmy Hahn, of Marblehead, Mass.

She will be greatly missed by her loving children and extended family, as well as her dear friends and loyal pets. Interment will be at the Old North Cemetery on Nantucket next to her husband.
