Maizie R. Matthews (Lawson) a lifelong resident of Whitman passed away at home on March 28, 2012. Mrs. Matthews was 93 years old. Maizie was the wife of the late James A. Matthews. She was the beloved mother of James A. “Pete” Matthews, Jr. of Florida, John Matthews of Florida, Wayne Matthews of Florida and Jayne Badore of Whitman. Maizie was the grandmother of 9, great-grandmother of 19 and, the great-great grandmother of 3. Mrs. Matthews is survived by her sister Hilda Braley of Whitman and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters Murle A. Rogerson and Virgil Hewitt.
Born on September 23, 1918 in E. Bridgewater Maizie was the daughter of the later John and Arita (White) Lawson. She attended Whitman schools, graduating in 1936. She was a lifetime parishioner of Holy Ghost Church in Whitman and was an avid gardener. Mrs. Matthews belonged to the Whitman Women’s Club and the Whitman Garden Club. She worked as a hostess at the Toll House Restaurant in Whitman and was the Chairwoman on the committee in the efforts to have the Toll House Cookie become Massachusetts’ “Official Cookie”. She said that her greatest joy was when she was surrounded by her family and friends.
