James Stockwell

James I. Stockwell (“Jim”) passed away unexpectedly July 14, 2014 at age 84 following complications from surgery. He was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Elsie Stockwell (Elsie Wear). He is survived by five children and five grandchildren.

Mr. Stockwell was born in 1930 and grew up in Boston’s suburban north shore. He graduated from Phillips Academy in Andover in 1948 and from MIT in 1952. After serving in the USAF as a Lieutenant from 1952-1954 in the Korean War, he returned to the Boston area, living in Cambridge with his wife and five children through the mid-seventies. He and Elsie also resided in Newton, Brighton, Orleans, Duxbury, and lastly Carleton-Willard Village in Bedford; all in Massachusetts.

Mr. Stockwell was an entrepreneur at heart and loved working at the leading edge of Technology. In 1957, Mr. Stockwell co-founded Adage Inc. with two MIT graduates, where he served as President, Treasurer, and Director until 1974. Adage was a Boston based manufacturer of computer graphics equipment. After leaving Adage, Mr. Stockwell worked for Heidrick and Struggles, an international executive search firm, where he was a Partner and Director of the Boston office, until he retired in 1992.

Mr. Stockwell was also a director of The Cambridge Trust Company from 1964 to 2005, and the director of its wholly owned subsidiary, Cambridge Online Systems. In addition, he was an officer or director for many Cambridge and Boston non-profit and charitable organizations including: Cambridge Community Services, Manomet Center for Conservation Sciences, National Multiple Sclerosis Society, The Shady Hill School, and Trinity Church, Boston.

Jim was an avid birdwatcher and all around nature enthusiast. He enjoyed lecturing on birds and wildlife in his later years, as well as advising and leading countless organizations, groups, and publications including the Carleton-Willard “Villager” from 2006 to 2014. He graciously gave his time and resources to many causes and efforts, expecting little in return other than integrity and accountability. He will be remembered to us all as a selfless provider, leader, advisor, contributor, and above all a true family man whose wife and children were always at the center of his life.

A private funeral is planned for Tuesday. A memorial service will be held on October 18 ^th at 2PM at the Carleton-Willard Village Auditorium located at 100 Old Billerica Road, Bedford, MA 01730.
