Ms. Helga Connor, a long time resident of Staten Island, NY, died peacefully last week after a brief illness.
Helga was born in 1934 and grew up amidst the ravages of World War II Germany. Originally from Karlsruhe, her family was displaced many times during the war. At the age of 20, Helga emigrated to America on her own, arriving in New York in 1954. She settled in the St. George area of Staten Island and worked as a hair stylist and bank teller; she attended Curtis High School night classes to learn English eventually becoming a US citizen. In 1964 she married Truman Connor, and the couple purchased a home in St. George where they raised their son Steven. After Truman’s passing in 1984, Helga re-entered the workforce as an employee of the New York City Board of Elections on Staten Island, retiring after 25 years of service. Helga was fiercely independent throughout her life; she won two battles with breast cancer and stayed active in the community. She enjoyed reading, supporting charitable organizations, gardening, shopping and taking care of her pets.
Her survivors include Steven Connor, his wife Barbara and grandchildren Alexander, Meredith and Jillian.
A private service is planned.
