Gertrude Murphy

Gertrude (Cardoza) Murphy, age 90, of Brockton, MA, passed away peacefully on February 21 ^st .  She was a long time resident of Abington, and later Rockland.  Daughter of the late Theotonio and Mary (Silva) Cardozo, she was born in Providence, RI, and spent much of her childhood in Brockton, MA, where she graduated from high school in 1945.  After graduation, she attended Bridgewater State Teachers College, and later graduated from Bridgewater State College with a Bachelor’s degree in Education.  She taught history at Rockland Junior High School for twenty-two years, retiring in 1990.  Gertrude was an avid reader who enjoyed knitting, yard sales, and visiting the library.  For many years she was an active member of the Kappa Chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society, and a volunteer at Catholic Charities.  Lovingly known as “Mimi” to her six grandchildren, she delighted in their accomplishments and thought everything they did was, “just grand.”

Gertrude leaves behind her son Michael F. Murphy, and his wife, Maureen, of Abington, and her son Charles E. Murphy of Lakeville.  She was predeceased by her beloved sister Alcina Alfonso, and her brother, Antonio Cardozo.  She was the mother of the late Ann Louise Murphy.  Loving grandmother to Jessica Kinsman of Plympton, Cheryl Chandler of Bridgewater, Matthew Libby of Boston, Michael Murphy of Abington, Pamela Natale of Mansfield, and Kevin Libby of Beaufort, South Carolina.  She is also survived by four great-grandchildren, Everett, Maeve, Jack, and Peter, her devoted niece and closest companion, Ruth Merlino of Middleboro, and several grand nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend visiting hours at the MacKinnon Funeral Home, 760 Washington Street, Whitman, on Monday February 26 ^th from 9:30-11:00 am.  Funeral service to follow at 11:00 am.
