Gerald (Gerry) Eugene Walters Sr. 26 year resident of Abington, devoted husband and beloved father died recently, 1-month short of his 88 th birthday at Beth Israel Deaconess M.C. on July 16, 2017.
Born in West Haven, CT in 16-August-1929, Gerry was the youngest of 8 children. Parents Benjamin Hall Walters and Annie Elizabeth (Donahue) Walters were originally from New Haven, CT. After graduating from West Haven High, Gerry enlisted in the US Army where he served in the Korean War Conflict as a light engineer from 1951 to 1953. One of Gerry’s passions was roller-skating where he met and married the late Margaret Mary Gorman, another enthusiastic skater in 1955. They raised 4 sons together at their home on Thomas Street near the beach they loved. Gerry is survived by his sons and their wives Gerald Jr. and Marian of CT, Bruce and Brigette of NH, Robbie and Teresa of AZ, and son Steven of CT.
For nearly 40 years Gerry worked as a telephone cable repair and lineman with SNET but claimed “never to have worked a day in his life” because he absolutely loved his job.
Gerry was introduced to Anne Louise (Lundgren) Fitzgerald, a widow with 4 grown children as well, through family match-makers Marianne and Fran. The couple married in May 1991. Gerry relocated to Abington and the inseparable couple soon became known as Gerri-Anne. They were active in the Democratic town committee, Abington Senior Center, St. Bridget and Holy Ghost congregations and became RV camping enthusiasts together. The two kept a Thursday night Holy Adoration Vigil at Holy Ghost Church in Whitman for 16 years. Gerry had a life-long love of music and engaged professionally in Barber Shop with the Fireside Four Quartet around New Haven as well as dancing and Chorus.
Gerry is survived by his loving wife Anne of 26 years, children and their spouses Corinne and Rubin of Hull, Kevin and Esther of Brockton, Michael and Maureen of Whitman, and son Stephen of Sydney, AU, Ralph and Linda of Erie, PA and daughter-in-law Edie of Brockton. He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren Andre and Lentz, Jared and Jordan Fitzgerald, Eli and Grady Walters, Devon, Mariah, Crew and Kingston Belair, Jessica and Nikki; Aurianne and Noah FitzMarquez, Millie and Mia Marquez and Lentz Fitzgerald.
Family and friends are welcome to visiting hours at the MacKinnon Funeral Home 760 Washington St., Whitman, Sunday July 23 rd 3-6 pm.
Funeral mass Monday in St. Bridget Church, Abington at 9 am. Burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Rockland.
