Gerald James "Skip" Mahoney, age 89, most recently residing in Brant Rock, MA, died peacefully on Sunday, June 12, 2016 at Wingate of Brewster, MA, with his loving children by his side. Skip, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Mahoney, brother of the late Betty Morrison, was born in Cambridge, MA on December 19, 1926 and raised in Belmont, MA, graduating from Belmont High School in 1945. Skip served in the Navy in WWII. After he returned home from the Navy, he married his high school sweetheart, wife of 63 years, the late Jeanne Kirby Mahoney on June 4, 1949. Skip and Jeanne were best friends, loved the ocean, and raised seven children together. The family lived in Lincoln, MA and Skip and Jeanne later retired to their honeymoon cottage in Brant Rock, MA. After graduating from Mass College of Pharmacy in 1951, Skip became owner of Billings and Stover Apothecary, established in 1852, in Harvard Square, Cambridge, MA.
The Mahoney children describe their father as a man who never lost his sense of humor, even at the end of his life, as a craftsman, poet, avid reader, and friend. Skip would love to sit on his porch facing the ocean and listen to Frank Sinatra, opera, and classical music. The porch was a place that his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews gathered for celebrations and holidays.
Skip is survived by children, Kathleen Mahoney and partner George of Franklin, MA, Gerry Mahoney of Brant Rock, MA, Annie Mahoney Gibbons and husband Mark of E. Dennis, MA, Joe Mahoney of Wareham, Ma, Billy Mahoney and wife Nevon of Kingston, MA, Sean Mahoney and wife Kate of Arlington, MA, and Kevin Mahoney and wife Denise of Worcester, MA. Skip was beloved grandfather of six grandchildren, Chelsea Gibbons, Christine Mahoney, Doug Mahoney, Madisyn Gibbons, Kyle Mahoney, and Cassidy Mahoney. Towards the end of his life, Skip enjoyed walking his dog Geena and spending time with his transient feline, Dennis the cat.
A service will be held at Our Lady of Assumption Parish, 40 Canal St, Marshfield, MA 02050 on Thursday, June 23, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. Skip faced the challenge of aging with humor and grace.
