Donald Murray

October 24, 1927 — September 2, 2009

CHATHAM – Donald Lenford Murray, 81, of Chatham, passed away peacefully on Sept. 2, 2009, surrounded by his loving family.

Born and raised in Villanova, Pa., he summered on Bassing Harbor in Chatham, and made it his permanent home in 1988.

Don graduated from The Haverford School in 1945 in Pennsylvania, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in 1949. He was also an honorable World War II veteran of the Navy.

As an engineer, he consulted for international corporations throughout the world, designing, building and maintaining extruded foam and plastics machines.

He was the father of Keith (predeceased), Kent and Dona; “granddad” of Sloane and Isabel; longtime partner of Penny Keith; and friend of former wife, Fay. He also leaves two brothers, Ken and Craig.

Don’s passions were his family, sailing, traveling and hiking. Whether sailing a sunfish around Pleasant Bay or captaining the “Haiku” to distant ports, he loved the wind behind him and the seas ahead. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A family gathering to celebrate his life is planned for the spring of 2010 in Philadelphia.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association, 1301 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, Suite 800, Washington, DC 20004.
