Barbara Belknap

June 27, 1929 — October 14, 2013

Barbara Ann Belknap, 84, died on Monday, October 14, 2013 with loving family by her side.  Born June 27, 1929 in Boston, MA to Mary O’Connell and Reginald Belknap, she grew up and lived in Boston all her life.  She taught ballroom dancing for many years and later worked as a night auditor at the Copley Plaza Hotel.  After retirement, she attended college and graduated from University of Massachusetts with a Bachelor of Arts in English at the age of 72.

Barbara was a devoted aunt and sister.  Her beloved brother, Charles F. Belknap, preceded her in death.  Although Barbara never had children of her own, she had many children in her life.  She is survived by her nephews Steven and Brian Belknap, her nieces Kathleen Belknap, Margery Dillenbeck, and Susan Schumacher, her great nephews Benjamin, Jack, and Daniel, her great nieces Page, Olivia, Samantha, Hannah, Meg, Alicia and Bibiana, and her sister-in-law Frances Belknap.

She especially shared her love of reading and cooking with her family.  She was a frequent visitor to the Boston Public Library and also to innumerable bookstores where she always purchased birthday books for her many nieces and nephews.

Special thanks to the staff at Golden Living Center Oak Hill in Middleborough for the exceptional care provided to Barbara.  We are forever grateful for the respectful loving care you provided which allowed her to maintain her dignity until the very end.

Auntie Barbara, we will always carry your memory in our hearts.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Boston Public Library, checks payable to “The Trustees of the Boston Public Library,” Boston Public Library, President’s Office, 700 Boylston St., Boston, MA 02116.
