Alden T. Brown, 89,of Chatham formerly of Port St. Lucie, Fla., passed away on Sept. 29, 2012, at the Liberty Commons Skilled Nursing Care Center in Chatham after a lengthy illness.
Born in Attleboro, Mass., on Nov. 17, 1922, with his twin sister, Priscilla B. Grindle, now of Skillman, N.J., he was the son of Charles Noyes Brown and Effie Saunders Brown. A descendant of Roger Williams, he graduated from Attleboro High School, playing saxophone in the band. He later studied electronics at Wentworth Institute in Boston where he met Sally May (Tobey) Brown, his wife of many years and mother of his four children.
Alden served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a radarman on the U.S.S. Zeilin in the Pacific, earning numerous medals.
After World War II, Alden worked in sales for the Standard Oil Co., while living in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Upon moving to West Dennis, he was a top salesman for Brown & Bigelow Inc. before starting his own home building business on Cape Cod.
He later enjoyed a successful career as a land developer and home builder in Lemoine, Maine, and then Campton, N.H., as owner of Alden Homes Inc.
Alden was an accomplished water skier, boater and shellfisherman. He enjoyed new cars, popular music, westerns and war movies. He also enjoyed playing bridge, dinner and cocktail parties. Alden was a longtime Florida resident but continued to spend summers with family and friends on Cape Cod and New Hampshire.
Alden is survived by his four children: daughter Robin C. Brown of Tilton, N.H., and sons Stephen W. Brown, Craig A. Brown, and Tyler T. Brown, all of Dennis. He was the grandfather of Derek and Wade Brown, Kelli Brown Dore and Amy Lynn Brown. He is also survived by his loving niece, Anne Blakeslee of Binghamton, N.Y.
The family will gather for a private graveside service at a future date at the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery, Concord, MA.
